If you wait long enough, life comes full circle. The leftists who were fighting against the right-wing oligarchs in El Salvador in the 1980s, the FMLN, and who were the 'evil' enemy of Ollie North and Ronald Reagan, are now running the country. And in Costa Rica, which abolished its military in the 1950s in favor of education and social-welfare programs, now is enmeshed in border conflicts with its neighbor Nicaragua and surrounded by gang violence and militaristic regimes.
Ain't parliamentary democracy great? What would the USA look like if we did not have a solid two-party system? More or less democratic? I'm not sure I really know the answer to that question. Someday we may see, however.
