Foreign sanctions. A dumb thing to do.

The U.S. government plans to sanction the Venezuelan state-run oil company for doing business with Iran. Who gave the U.S. government the right to tell foreign companies, or foreign governments, what they can and cannot do?
I am not a fan of autocrat Hugo Chavez or his so-called "21st Century Bolivarian Socialism," nor do I think Simon Bolivar would have been. But why does America continue its crusade to force others to do what we think is right?
