"Right-wing" extremists aid "left" in Ecuador?

Ecuador's president says "right-wing" extremists in the United States are aiding the opposition in Ecuador. If he's talking about the Republican Party, he might be right. USAID funnels money to both the GOP and Demo organizations set up to "promote" American style democracy abroad. See the AP story here. Of course, the very interesting thing here is that the "opposition" in Ecuador lately has been a coalition of Indian and "left-wing" nationalists who oppose the president's efforts to open the country to natural-resource exploration, a la Peru. So, what is it? Right wing? Left wing? Just goes to show how useless and misleading labels can be at times.
