Brazil and all of Latin America celebrated recently when Rio de Janeiro was chosen as the site of the 2016 summer Olympics. That's seven years from now, and it's clear that the biggest challenge for the organizers and for Brazil's government will be to get some sort of handle on the security situation in the
favelas. For anyone who missed it, John Lee Anderson's "Gangland" article in the 5 October edition of the New Yorker on the ongoing warfare inside the slums in Rio is a must-read.
